Vilhelm Moberg (1898-1973) is perhaps best known for his four-volume “Emigrants” series of novels, filmed by director Jan Troell as The Emigrants and The New Land (starring Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann). In Sweden he is also known as an historian (A History of the Swedish People) and playwright. Minnesota Historical Society Press has now published The Brides of Midsummer, translated by Gudrun Brunot. In this 1946 novel, four musicians from different eras tell their stories by the “Bridal Spring” on Midsummer, a day of celebration—and excess. The book can be ordered from MHS Press or Amazon and is available in print and e-book editions.
